Ingredients

  • 4 slices sourdough or sandwich bread
  • 1 1/2 cups shredded sharp cheddar cheese
  • 1 crisp apple, thinly sliced
  • 2 tablespoons butter, softened
  • 1 teaspoon Dijon mustard, optional
  • 1 teaspoon honey, optional
  • Pinch of black pepper, to sprinkle over the apple and cheese before grilling

Substitutions

  • Use Monterey Jack, gouda, or another cheese that melts smoothly in place of cheddar.
  • Replace butter with a thin layer of mayonnaise or dairy-free butter on the outside of the bread.

Instructions

Step 1: Prepare the bread

Spread butter on one side of each bread slice. Add Dijon mustard or honey to the inside if desired.

Step 2: Add cheese and apples

Layer cheddar cheese and thin apple slices between two slices of bread. Sprinkle the listed pinch of black pepper over the apple and cheese before closing the sandwiches, keeping the buttered sides facing out.

How to Store Leftovers

Cool any leftover sandwich, wrap it well, and refrigerate within 2 hours. For the best texture, store sliced apple separately if possible and make a fresh sandwich rather than holding an assembled one for several days.

How to Reheat

Reheat Apple Cheddar Grilled Cheese in a dry skillet over medium-low heat or in a toaster oven until the bread is crisp again and the cheddar is melted. Add fresh apple after heating if you stored it separately.
